Funa Ye, born in 1986 in Kunming, China, is an artist and researcher based in Beijing. Her practice critically engages with the realities of daily life, examining the perceived nexus between authority and various societal domains, including power structures and marginalised groups such as migrant workers, ethnic minorities in China (referring to the non-Han ethnic population), women, and LGBTQ+ individuals. Funa’s politically charged art employs pastiche to critique and satirise cultural uniformity. She has long been involved in participatory art, both online and offline, incorporating new technologies and engaging with diverse ethnic minority communities. She has also worked closely with the SMART community—a working-class subculture of rural migrants known for their striking fashion and colourful hair—focusing on the intersection of ethnicity and SMART culture. By collaborating with key figures in this community, Funa co-creates their representations in both China’s fine art scene and social media, illustrating how they are the “Mastr” (a deliberate misspelling reflecting subcultural identity) of their own lives. Additionally, her work engages with digital media, encouraging public participation, particularly from underprivileged communities, through live-streaming as art performances.
As an advocate for self-publishing, Funa co-founded the independent publishing brand “MondayOFF,” editing and authoring artist books such as “Shamate zine” and “Fire Golden Flowers.”
Her solo exhibitions have been showcased at venues such as the 4A Centre for Contemporary Asian Art and Nottingham Contemporary, followed by group exhibits at esteemed institutions like the Museum für Fotografie, National Taiwan Museum of Fine Arts, esea contemporary, PSA, Chronus Art Center, Art Center Nabi, and Rhizome of the New Museum.
Funa now teaches at Beijing’s Central Academy of Fine Arts in the Experimental Art and Sci-Tech Art Department and at University College London’s Slade School of Fine Art. She has also been invited to participate in conferences and lectures at Tate Modern, Asia Society New York, UCCA, Goldsmiths University, the China Academy of Art, and the Manchester China Institute, among others.
